"Two Heads Are Better than One"

"Two Heads Are Better than One", Fine Art
"Two Heads Are Better than One"
I represented two classical planar head busts in two-dimensional illusion using compressed charcoal. My inspiration stemmed from Rick Graham's instruction regarding the variety of planes and angles found on the human head and face. Each "change of direction" represents a value shift when the model/reference is illuminated by a single light source. Rick challenged class members to dramatically represent even the most minute planar shifts of the human face and head using a monochromatic compressed charcoal drawing. The exercise was designed to provide valuable instruction in the structure of the face and head, as well as a nuanced exercise in values. Highlights, half-tones, reflected light, core shadows, and cast shadows are all represented in the drawing.

Artist Statement
Figure artists must become semi-expert at human anatomy. Bones, muscles, tendons, etc., are important to master in order to accurately portray the human body. Heads and faces are made up of a series of planes and angles. My piece, "Two Heads Are Better than One", is a dual charcoal drawing that illustrates the planar nature of the human head and face in a dramatic fashion. One bust is shown in profile; the other in three quarter view; one is in blacks and grays; the other in sepia, gray and black. Both illustrate the often subtle values that are represented with each change of plane or direction, and which give the human face such wonderful character. "Two Heads Are Better than One" represents my classical statement on portraiture.
