Artist Statement

Figure artists must become semi-expert at human anatomy. Bones, muscles, tendons, etc., are important to master in order to accurately portray the human body. Heads and faces are made up of a series of planes and angles. My piece, "Two Heads Are Better than One", is a dual charcoal drawing that illustrates the planar nature of the human head and face in a dramatic fashion. One bust is shown in profile; the other in three quarter view; one is in blacks and grays; the other in sepia, gray and black. Both illustrate the often subtle values that are represented with each change of plane or direction, and which give the human face such wonderful character. "Two Heads Are Better than One" represents my classical statement on portraiture.
